Steps to Implement Food Donation Program

1. Reach out to Food Rescue US
a. Say you have extra food and ask if they would be willing to pick up and donate
b. Contact: kate@foodrescue.us and eva@foodrescue.us
2. Create a collection system for leftover individual snacks
a. Find a place for snacks to be stored throughout the week (we use the fridge in our staff room)
b. Place labeled bins throughout the school for kids to put the leftover snacks
c. At the end of each day, these are brought to the main storage area (we have volunteers do this for service hours)

3. Contact your cafeteria staff
a. Gauge how much food is left over at the end of each week
b. Find a storage area to keep perishables throughout the week (ours get stored on a cart in our walk-in fridge in the cafeteria kitchen)
4. Discuss the best day of the week for pickup with Food Rescue (preferably Friday so food is not stored over the weekend)
5. Each Friday, support students in bringing snacks and cafeteria food out to Food Rescue volunteers and loading it into their vehicle
a. Make sure to confirm the pickup the day before with kate@foodrescue.us and your cafeteria staff
b. Estimate and record the weight of food being picked up
Congratulations, you have just implemented the Fruitful Connection School Donation Plan at your school!
